Лауреатами Нобелевской премии по физике стали трое учёных из Великобритании. Это Дэйвид Таулесс, Майкл Костерлиц и Данкан Холдейн. Все трое награждены, как говорится в официальной сводке, за „теоретические открытия топологических фазовых переходов и топологических фаз материи“.
На своём сайте Нобелевский комитет сообщает, что британские учёные своим открытием доказывают, что материя способна принимать неизведанные ранее состояния. Получается, что работа учёных как бы приоткрывает дверцу в доселе неизведанный мир. Для изучения необычных состояний или фаз, а также материи и цвета учёные применили самые передовые математические методы.
Об этом сказано и в названии научного труда. Топология — это и есть раздел математики, в переводе означающий „непрерывность“. Но здесь не фигурируют метрические характеристики исследуемых объектов. Как образно заметили в Нобелевском комитете, по топологии, например, булочку, бублик и крендель отличает единственное — это дырки. Как известно, в булочках вообще они отсутствуют, в бублике одна дырка, а в кренделе — две.
Возникает вопрос — насколько нужна материи топология. Суть в том, что каждый материал имеет свои свойства, нередко очень сложные. Поэтому понять поведение материального мира непросто, следовательно, почти невозможно угадать, что будет происходить завтра, послезавтра. Учёный мир много лет находится в поиске принципов, достаточно простых, которые бы помогли понять этот материальный мир, и на научной основе предсказать будущее.
Британские физики вплотную подошли к решению этой задачи. Они сумели доказать, что в тонких слоях всех материалов возможна сверхпроводимость. Она представляет собой способность электронов проходить через материю с сопротивлением равным нулю.
Открытие может дать путь к совершенно новым явления и процессам. Ну а уже сегодня труд учёных может воплотиться в изобретение квантовых телевизоров и в создание инновационных технологий.
